Artists: David Ward, Ray Carpenter and Stephen Parry
Location: Cromer, Norfolk
Commissions East worked in partnership with North Norfolk District Council to secure funding for the appointment of a lead artist to work with the team responsible for the regeneration of Cromer's seafront and pier.
Working with landscape designers Mott MacDonald, lead artist David Ward incorporated details of historic lifeboat rescues into the landscaping of the pier forecourt using brass inlaid text in a unique font designed for Cromer by typographer Ray Carpenter. Transformed at night, Cromer's famous flint walls are illuminated by subtle washes of coloured light that Ward developed with lighting designer Chris Baldwin. Artist Stephen Parry was commissioned to create a series of large ceramic panels for the Rocket House Museum that reflect Cromer's changing light, sand and sea.
'Artlights', a professional development opportunity for ten Norfolk-based artists was initiated as part of the project and developed with the assistance of Commissions East and Norwich Arts Centre.
'Cromer Prospect' was commissioned by North Norfolk District Council and developed by Commissions East with funding from Arts Council England, East, the East of England Development Agency, the European Regional Development Fund, North Norfolk District Council and Cromer Town Council.
