Artist: Adam Bridgland
Location: Futures Community College, Southend
Futures Community College, Southend, opened in September 2007 as a Trust School working in partnership with Prospects College, a leading provider of vocational training in South Essex and the Thames Gateway. One of sixteen 'pathfinder' Trust Schools being developed throughout England, Futures Community College has made rapid progress in raising standards and ensuring students achieve their full potential.
In 2009 with the assistance of Commissions East, Futures Community College appointed artist Adam Bridgland to create a permanent commission for the new Upper College.
'You Will Have Dignity If You Come Here' is Adam's first major public art commission. Working with staff and students in the research and development of the commission, the title of the work is inspired from a line of a poem written by a student during one of Adam's workshops at the college.
Made from Enamel, Aluminum and Corten Steel, the work links to achievement and awards, the star also references the lights on Southend's famous promenade. This is emphasized by the photoluminescent paint around the edges of the aluminum frame that bring the artwork to life at night.
The project was commissioned by Futures Community College and managed by Commissions East.
