Le Salon Des Trois Reines

Artist: Robin Blackledge
Location: Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, Norwich

Artist Robin Blackledge was appointed in 2002
to develop a permanent commission for the Children’s Unit at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, Norwich. Alongside the commission, Blackledge was offered a Research Fellowship in the Print and Photo-media Department at the Norwich School of Art and Design, plus the opportunity to work closely with staff at the Inspire Science Centre, Norwich.

Science, communication and the use of new technologies were the starting point for the project, which resulted in an interactive site-specific commission for the Hospital called ‘Le Salon Des Trois Reines’ (The Salon of the Three Queens). Blackledge transformed the main corridor leading to the Children’s Unit into a lavish multi-sensory environment, where patients, staff and visitors can immerse themselves in a pink glow whilst moving from one hairdryer to another, gathering sound bites as they move through the space.

A publication and CD Rom were produced alongside the commission.

This commission was supported by Arts Council England, East
