Gavin Turk's 'Les Bikes du Bois Rond' at Frieze

‘Les Bikes du Bois Rond’ designed and produced by Gavin Turk in response to the work of Polish artist Andre Cadere recently travelled to Frieze 2010, where they were available to be ridden by the public within The Sculpture Park.

‘Les Bikes du Bois Rond’ were commissioned by Commissions East as part of the Fleet project and one of the bicycles was exhibited along side the work of Andre Cadere in an exhibition at the Town Hall Galleries in Ipswich which was curated by Gavin Turk from the FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais collection.

As part of Fleet, the bicycles were used for two guided bike rides on the Suffolk and Essex coast and also featured in an exhibition at artconnexion in Lille and a series of short public rides around the City.

Gavin Turk was born in 1967. He achieved notoriety for his final piece at the Royal College of Art – a blue heritage plaque inscribed ‘Gavin Turk worked here 1989-1991’. He is one of the most respected of his generation of Young British Artists. Gavin, who once had the re-cycle symbol “tattooed” on his hands in a playful acknowledgement of the artist-as-magpie, is well known for his recycling and paraphrases of well known works of art, which often involve him disguised as tragic anti-heroes or revolutionaries such as Sid Vicious, Andy Wharhol and Che Guevara.

As Lead Artist, Gavin has contributed to Fleet’s overall artistic vision and supported other artists commissioned to undertake residencies, projects and commissions for seven sites on the Suffolk and Essex coasts.
