cb1 is the first major and largest regeneration scheme to take place in the Cambridge railway station area for nearly half a century. The planning application for the first phase of this important development of housing, office and retail space was approved at the end of October. It includes architectural contributions from some of Britain's most celebrated contemporary architects and artists.
Lead artist, David Cotterrell, has developed a strategy for the site with the support of Commissions East, with more than eight commissions proposed.
The first two major commissions are by Antoni Malinowski and Dryden Goodwin for the Southern Entrance of the site and the Bus Interchange.
Antoni Malinowski's innovative ideas for the Southern Entrance aim to provide a connection between the architecture, location and spirit of place, whilst Dryden Goodwin will work with the existing structural designs of the bus shelters using the glass panels to present sequences of hand drawn portraits collected whilst on bus trips through Cambridge, with LCD screens showing short animations.
These commissions will be installed in 2011.
