CB1 artist Jem Finer, explores Cambridge's strong links with computing

Commissioned by Hill Residential, ‘Supercomputer’ by artist and musician Jem Finer is the third major public project for the CB1 site.

Jem Finer is working with architects Pollard Thomas Edwards and landscape architects Robert Myers Associates, to develop this interactive sound sculpture which will compliment the architecture and public realm of this new city quarter, and relates to Cambridge’s strong association with computing.

‘Supercomputer’ is a work that will both engage the public and be a focus within the development. A functioning computer, it will be made from a series of beautifully constructed and designed pipes and will be enclosed in an elegant glass fronted pavilion, similar to the mainframe computers of the 1970s.

‘Supercomputer’ will be designed to play pitched percussive instruments incorporated in the structure, in effect turning the computer into a composing calculator. The sounds generated by the sculpture will be relayed through a speaker system incorporated in the pavilion’s structure which will be activated at certain points of the day.

‘Supercomputer’ has been inspired by Cambridge mathematician John Conway who invented ‘The Game of Life’.
