Artist: Tim Head
Location: Artezium, Luton
‘Light Rain’ by artist Tim Head was conceived of as an integral part of the construction of Artezium, the new arts and media centre for Luton. The idea came about after discussions with Artezium and the architects for the building, Fletcher Priest Associates. Tim Head planned a work that responded to the multimedia arts activities that would take place in the building.
The result, 'Light Rain', is constructed from approximately 6,000 reflectors fixed onto a stainless steel mesh 17 metres high and 7 metres wide. The reflectors are normally used for roadside markings, an oblique reference to Luton’s motor industry. The engineering was designed by artist Tom Lomax.
The nature of the work is affected by the position of the viewer and the changing ambient light conditions in the courtyard. Subdued and discrete, theatrical and vibrant, the work has an infinite variety of subtle moods.
