Escalier

‘Escalier’ was commissioned in 1996 as part of the refurbishment of the Cambridge Arts Theatre.

Artist Ron Hasleden created a sound and light installation for the main stairwell. Multi-coloured LEDs were embedded in the wall in a series of randomly configured lines, activated by people entering the stairwell who also trigger small speakers to emit sound fragments. Theatre goers orchestrate the light and sound which cascades up and down the space.

Sensitivity to context, the use of new technologies and innovative use of space create a dramatic response to the opportunities presented in incorporating art into a theatre building.
