Audio Cab

Imogen Stidworthy developed a CD work that was installed in Luton-based taxis, which could be booked in advance or stumbled across by chance. The brief was to work with communities that weren’t aware of the heritage sites of Dunstable Downs and De Greys Mausoleum. During her research, Stidworthy spoke to taxi drivers, many of whom had emigrated to the UK. The drivers speak of the strong associations and memories evoked by the landscape – of people and places, of England, India, Pakistan or Kashmir. Moved to record these conversations, ‘Audio Cab’ brought together speech, languages, music, taxi radio and ambient sound to invoke the space between real and absent places.
