Flow

Artists: Patricia Derrick, Dominique Rey, Townley and Bradby
Location: Norwich, Norfolk

During the development of 'Mise en Scene' by Anne and Patrick Poirier for Hay Hill in Norwich, Commissions East and Norwich City Council commissioned a series of temporary projects from four Norfolk-based artists - Patricia Derrick, Dominique Rey and Townley and Bradby. Highlighting the rich history of Norwich's market places, 'Flow' coincided with a celebration of visual art, Contemporary Art Norwich (CAN.05).

Patricia Derrick's site-specific installation for the Maddermarket Church referred to Norwich's long-forgotten cloth and dye industry, in particular the 'Madder Red' colour for which Norwich was most famous. Traces of this vivid dye apeared to emerge or ooze from the walls, buildings, trees and earth around the church. Dominique Rey's video projection for the New Museum of Contemporary Art traced the import of spices and the export of worsted weaving between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, whilst the contemporary hustle and bustle of Norwich was revealed by Townley and Bradby as they invited visitors to explore playful variations on their normal journeys through Hay Hill.

A professional practice programme for postgraduate students from Norwich School of Art and Design was developed alongside 'Flow', giving participating students an insight into the commissioning process.
