Matrix Revealed

Artist: Julienne Dolphin Wilding
Location: High Lodge Forest Centre, Thetford Forest, Norfolk

High Lodge Forest Centre is the focal point for over 1.5 million visitors per year to Thetford Forest.

As part of the extension of the Centre, Forest Enterprise (a division of the Forestry Commission) commissioned Julienne Dolphin Wilding to work with staff and visitors on the development of a new feature for the complex.

'Matrix Revealed' is a twelve metre high sculpture constructed from ten tonnes of concrete. Appearing to be a geological core sample, rings denoting chalk, flint, sand and loam show what lies beneath the forest floor. Children, in particular, are fascinated by the rabbit warrens, dear skulls and flint hand axes just visible at the top of the structure. Based on Dolphin Wilding's field trips to local Neolithic flint mines, the sculpture serves as a landmark and meeting point, whilst educating visitors about the geology and ecology of the forest.

'Matrix Revealed' was commissioned by Forest Enterprise and developed by Commissions East with funding from Arts Council England, East.
