Artist: Stefan Gec
Location: Tilbury, Essex
‘Tilbury Mappamundi’, Stefan Gec's temporary installation for the former railway station of the vast London Cruise Terminal, engaged with the town and docks of Tilbury in Essex, creating a survey of the area that drew upon its history and connections with the wider world.
The installation consisted of an aerial film documenting the current layout of the town, its docks and the liner berth on the Thames, accompanied by a narrative sound piece created from archival text and writing about the area including excerpts from the ‘Port of London Journal’.
In presenting this contemporary view, while simultaneously reaching back into time using forgotten or unknown voices, Stefan Gec revealed a short but relevant picture of Tilbury's history, reflecting its social and economic position both locally and worldwide.
With the assistance of the Port of Tilbury, 'Tilbury Mappamundi' was commissioned by Thurrock Council and developed by Commissions East as part of Arts Generate, a programme of culturally-led regeneration funded by Arts Council England, East.
